Biafran Independence Movement
The Biafran Independence Movement is a political and social movement that seeks to establish an independent state for the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria. This movement gained significant attention during the late 1960s, leading to the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), also known as the Biafran War, when the region declared independence as the Republic of Biafra.
The conflict resulted in widespread humanitarian crises, including famine and displacement. Although the war ended with Biafra's reintegration into Nigeria, the movement has continued to influence discussions about self-determination and ethnic identity among the Igbo, with groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) advocating for renewed independence efforts.
