Berber lion
The Berber lion, also known as the Barbary lion, is a subspecies of lion that once roamed North Africa, particularly in the Atlas Mountains and surrounding regions. It is characterized by its large size, thick mane, and distinctive coloration, which can range from light tan to dark brown. The Berber lion is now considered extinct in the wild, with the last known individuals disappearing in the early 20th century.
Conservation efforts have been made to preserve the genetic lineage of the Berber lion through captive breeding programs. Some zoos and wildlife reserves around the world maintain populations of these lions, aiming to educate the public about their history and the importance of wildlife conservation. The Berber lion is often associated with the historical regions of North Africa and is a symbol of the rich biodiversity that once existed there.
