Benzenediol
Benzenediol, also known as hydroquinone, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H6O2. It consists of a benzene ring with two hydroxyl (–OH) groups attached to it. This compound exists in two isomeric forms: 1,2-benzenediol (catechol) and 1,4-benzenediol (hydroquinone), each having distinct properties and uses.
Benzenediol is commonly used in various applications, including as a reducing agent in chemical reactions and as a precursor in the synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, hydroquinone is often found in skin-lightening products due to its ability to inhibit melanin production.
