Beguin
A Beguin is a member of a religious community of women in the Middle Ages, particularly in the Low Countries. These women lived together in a semi-monastic lifestyle, focusing on spirituality and community service without taking formal vows. The movement began in the 12th century and provided women with an alternative to traditional marriage and convent life.
The term is also associated with the Beguinages, which were housing complexes built for these communities. The most famous Beguinage is in Bruges, Belgium, recognized for its historical significance and beautiful architecture. Today, many Beguinages are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting their cultural importance.
