Beguine
A Beguine is a member of a Christian lay community that originated in the 12th century in the Low Countries, particularly in present-day Belgium and the Netherlands. These women lived in semi-monastic communities, focusing on spirituality, charity, and service while maintaining independence from traditional monastic vows. They often engaged in various forms of work, including teaching and nursing.
The Beguine movement was notable for its emphasis on women's roles in religious life, allowing them to live freely while still dedicating themselves to faith. The most famous Beguine community was in the city of Bruges, where their unique lifestyle contributed to the cultural and spiritual landscape of the time.
