Bayonet Constitution
The Bayonet Constitution was a document imposed on the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1887, significantly limiting the power of the monarchy and increasing the influence of American and European interests. It was drafted by a group of wealthy planters and businessmen, who threatened the reigning monarch, King Kalākaua, with violence if he did not sign it. The constitution effectively disenfranchised many native Hawaiians and shifted political power to a small elite.
This constitution is often seen as a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history, leading to the eventual overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. The Republic of Hawaii was established shortly after, further solidifying the control of foreign interests over the islands. The Bayonet Constitution remains a symbol of the struggle between native sovereignty and foreign domination in Hawaii.
