The Battle of Roncevaux Pass took place in 778 AD in the Pyrenees mountains of modern-day Spain. It was a conflict between the forces of the Frankish king Charlemagne and the Basque tribes. Charlemagne's rear guard, led by Roland, was ambushed while returning from a campaign in Spain, resulting in a significant defeat for the Franks.
The battle is famously depicted in the epic poem The Song of Roland, which highlights themes of heroism and loyalty. Although the Franks were ultimately defeated, the battle became a symbol of resistance and valor in medieval literature and history.
