Asturian Kingdom
The Asturian Kingdom was a medieval Christian kingdom in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, established in the early 8th century. It emerged after the Muslim conquest of the region, with its first king, Pelayo, leading a successful resistance against the Moors at the Battle of Covadonga in 722. This victory is often considered the beginning of the Reconquista, a long process of reclaiming territory from Muslim rule.
The kingdom played a crucial role in the formation of modern Spain, serving as a cultural and political center for Christian resistance. Over time, it expanded its territory and influence, eventually leading to the establishment of the Kingdom of León in the 10th century. The Asturian Kingdom is also known for its unique architectural heritage, including the famous Asturian pre-Romanesque churches.
