Battle of Anzio
The Battle of Anzio was a significant military engagement during World War II, taking place from January 22 to June 5, 1944. Allied forces, primarily composed of American and British troops, aimed to outflank the German defenses in Italy by landing at Anzio, a coastal town near Rome. The operation intended to relieve pressure on the forces fighting in the Italian campaign.
Despite initial successes, the Allies faced fierce resistance from German troops, leading to a prolonged stalemate. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but ultimately, the Allies managed to break through and advance toward Rome, which was captured on June 4, 1944.
