Operation Shingle
Operation Shingle was an Allied military operation during World War II, launched on January 22, 1944. Its primary objective was to land troops at Anzio, Italy, to outflank German forces and relieve pressure on the Allied troops fighting in the Italian Campaign. The operation aimed to capture Rome and disrupt German supply lines.
The landing at Anzio involved American and British forces, including the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division and the British 1st Infantry Division. Despite initial successes, the operation faced strong German counterattacks, leading to a prolonged stalemate. Ultimately, Operation Shingle contributed to the eventual Allied advance into Rome later that year.
