Basque Identity
Basque identity is rooted in the unique culture, language, and history of the Basque Country, a region located in northern Spain and southwestern France. The Basque people, known as the Euskaldunak, speak the Basque language or Euskara, which is distinct from the Romance languages surrounding it. This linguistic uniqueness is a key component of their cultural identity.
Traditionally, Basque identity is also expressed through customs, cuisine, and sports, such as pelota and herri kirolak. The region has a strong sense of community and pride, often emphasizing its historical autonomy and distinctiveness from neighboring cultures. Festivals and traditional attire further celebrate this rich heritage.
