Barrières de Paris
The "Barrières de Paris" were a series of toll gates established in the 18th century around the city of Paris. Their primary purpose was to collect taxes on goods entering the city, helping to fund public services and infrastructure. These gates were strategically placed along major roads leading into Paris.
Constructed between 1784 and 1790, the barriers featured distinctive architecture and were often adorned with sculptures. The system was dismantled during the French Revolution in 1791, as the new government sought to eliminate tolls and promote free trade. Today, remnants of the barriers can still be seen in some areas of Paris.
