Barbary macaques
The Barbary macaque is a species of monkey native to the mountainous regions of North Africa, particularly in Morocco and Algeria. They are unique among macaques as they are the only species found outside of Asia. These primates have a thick coat of light brown or gray fur and are known for their expressive faces and social behavior.
Barbary macaques live in troops that can consist of up to 100 individuals, led by a dominant male. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, and seeds, but they may also consume insects. Their social structure is complex, with strong bonds formed between members of the troop.
