Ayodhya land dispute
The Ayodhya land dispute is a long-standing legal and religious conflict in India over a site believed by many Hindus to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. The site is also home to the Babri Masjid, a mosque built in the 16th century. The dispute intensified in the late 20th century, leading to significant political and social tensions.
In 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished by a large group of Hindu activists, sparking widespread riots and violence. After years of legal battles, the Supreme Court of India ruled in November 2019 that the land should be handed over to a trust for the construction of a Ram Temple, while providing an alternative site for a mosque.
