Aviz dynasty
The Aviz dynasty was a royal family that ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1580. It began when John I became king after the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, which secured Portugal's independence from Castile. The dynasty is known for its significant contributions to the Age of Discovery, during which Portuguese explorers expanded their territories and trade routes.
Under the Aviz dynasty, Portugal experienced economic growth and cultural flourishing. Notable monarchs included Manuel I, who oversaw the height of Portugal's maritime empire, and Henry the Navigator, a key figure in early exploration. The dynasty ended with the death of King Sebastian in 1578, leading to a succession crisis.
