Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese prince born in 1394, known for his significant role in the early days of the Age of Exploration. He established a school for navigation in Sagres, where he gathered experts to improve maritime knowledge and ship design. His efforts helped Portugal become a leading maritime power.
Henry sponsored numerous expeditions along the West African coast, aiming to find new trade routes and expand Christianity. Although he never sailed on these voyages himself, his support led to important discoveries, including the Azores and Madeira islands, paving the way for future explorers like Vasco da Gama.
