Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) is a self-governing region established in the aftermath of the Syrian Civil War. It primarily encompasses areas populated by the Kurdish people, along with other ethnic groups such as Arabs and Assyrians. AANES aims to create a democratic and inclusive governance structure, promoting local decision-making and community participation.
AANES operates independently from the Syrian government and has its own administrative bodies, security forces, and educational systems. It has gained international attention for its efforts in promoting gender equality and combating extremism, particularly through the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which played a significant role in the fight against ISIS.
