Australian Brush-turkey
The Australian Brush-turkey (Talegalla cucculata) is a large bird native to the rainforests of eastern Australia. It is known for its distinctive black plumage, bright red head, and yellow wattle. This ground-dwelling bird is a member of the family Megapodiidae, which includes other mound-building birds.
Brush-turkeys are unique for their nesting behavior. They build large mounds of decomposing leaves and soil, where they lay their eggs. The heat generated by the decomposition incubates the eggs, allowing the chicks to hatch fully developed and ready to fend for themselves.
