Attempted Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
The attempted assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand occurred on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The archduke, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was targeted by a group of nationalist conspirators known as the Black Hand. Initially, a bomb was thrown at his motorcade, but it missed, injuring others instead.
Later that day, while the archduke was traveling to visit the wounded, his driver took a wrong turn, leading them directly to Gavrilo Princip, one of the conspirators. Princip seized the opportunity and shot both the archduke and his wife, Sophie, killing them. This event set off a chain reaction that contributed to the outbreak of World War I.
