Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred in August 1945 during World War II. The United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9. These bombings aimed to force Japan's surrender and end the war, resulting in significant destruction and loss of life.
The bomb dropped on Hiroshima, known as "Little Boy," killed an estimated 140,000 people, while "Fat Man," dropped on Nagasaki, resulted in around 70,000 deaths. The bombings marked the first and only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, leading to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945.
