Atlantic Sturgeon
The Atlantic Sturgeon is a large fish species native to the Atlantic Ocean and its rivers. It is known for its elongated body, bony scutes instead of scales, and a long snout. This fish can grow up to 14 feet long and weigh over 800 pounds. Atlantic Sturgeons are anadromous, meaning they migrate from the ocean to freshwater rivers to spawn.
Historically, Atlantic Sturgeons were abundant, but their populations have declined due to overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. They are now listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. Conservation efforts are in place to help restore their populations and protect their habitats.
