Assam Accord
The Assam Accord is an agreement signed in 1985 between the Government of India and various organizations representing the people of Assam. It aimed to address issues related to illegal immigration and the rights of indigenous people in the state. The accord sought to provide a framework for the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, as well as to ensure political and economic rights for the local population.
The accord was a result of the Assam Movement, which began in the late 1970s, driven by concerns over demographic changes and cultural identity. Key provisions included the granting of citizenship to those who settled in Assam before 1971 and the establishment of measures to protect the interests of the Assamese people.
