Article 48
Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution allowed the President of Germany to take emergency measures without the consent of the Reichstag, the German parliament. This article was intended to maintain order during crises, enabling the President to rule by decree in situations where public safety was threatened.
However, Article 48 was often misused, leading to authoritarian governance. It played a significant role in the rise of the Nazi Party, as leaders like Adolf Hitler exploited these emergency powers to dismantle democratic institutions and establish a totalitarian regime, ultimately contributing to the collapse of the Weimar Republic.
