Arecibo
The Arecibo Observatory was a large radio telescope located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Completed in 1963, it was one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world, used for various scientific research, including radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar observations of planets. The observatory featured a 305-meter dish, which allowed it to collect signals from distant celestial objects.
In August 2020, the Arecibo Observatory suffered significant structural damage, leading to its eventual collapse in December 2020. The facility played a crucial role in many discoveries, including the first exoplanet detection and contributions to the study of pulsars and near-Earth asteroids.
