Arecibo Observatory
The Arecibo Observatory was a large radio telescope located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Completed in 1963, it was used for various scientific purposes, including radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar observations of planets. The observatory featured a 305-meter dish, making it one of the largest and most powerful telescopes in the world.
In August 2020, the observatory's dish suffered significant damage, leading to concerns about its structural integrity. Despite efforts to repair it, the National Science Foundation decided to decommission the facility, and the dish collapsed in December 2020, marking the end of an era for this iconic scientific instrument.
