Aptenodytes Patagonicus
Aptenodytes patagonicus, commonly known as the king penguin, is the second-largest species of penguin, reaching heights of about 3 feet. They are primarily found on sub-Antarctic islands, such as South Georgia and Macquarie Island. These penguins are known for their striking orange and yellow ear patches and their distinctive black and white plumage.
King penguins are social birds that breed in large colonies. They feed mainly on krill and small fish, diving to depths of up to 300 meters in search of food. Their breeding cycle is unique, with a lengthy incubation period of about 54 days, during which they care for their single egg.
