Antheraea assamensis
Antheraea assamensis is a species of silk moth native to the northeastern region of India, particularly in the state of Assam. It is known for producing high-quality silk, often referred to as Muga silk, which is prized for its natural golden color and durability. The moth's larvae feed primarily on the leaves of specific host plants, including Som and Saal trees.
The adult moths have a wingspan of about 10 to 12 centimeters and display a striking appearance with yellowish-brown wings adorned with distinctive patterns. Antheraea assamensis plays a significant role in the local economy, as Muga silk production supports traditional weaving practices and provides livelihoods for many artisans in the region.
