Andean bear
The Andean bear, also known as the spectacled bear, is a unique species native to the Andes mountains in South America. It is the only bear species found in this region and is characterized by its distinctive facial markings, which resemble spectacles. These bears typically have a black or dark brown coat and can weigh between 220 to 440 pounds.
Andean bears are primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, and flowers, but they may also consume insects and small animals. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to disperse seeds, which supports forest regeneration. Their population is currently threatened due to habitat loss and poaching.
