Ancient Greek Colonies
Ancient Greek colonies were settlements established by Greek city-states, primarily between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE. These colonies were founded to alleviate population pressures, seek new trade opportunities, and spread Greek culture. They were often located along the coasts of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, including areas like Sicily, Southern Italy, and Asia Minor.
Each colony maintained ties with its mother city, or polis, while developing its own local government and economy. The establishment of these colonies contributed to the spread of Hellenic culture and facilitated trade networks that connected various regions, enhancing cultural exchange and economic prosperity.
