Amrit (Nectar)
Amrit, often referred to as "nectar," is a significant concept in various Indian religions, particularly in Hinduism and Buddhism. It symbolizes immortality and divine sustenance, believed to grant eternal life and spiritual enlightenment. In Hindu mythology, Amrit was produced during the churning of the ocean, known as Samudra Manthan, where gods and demons collaborated to obtain this precious substance.
In Sikhism, Amrit holds a different but equally important meaning. It refers to the sacred nectar used in the initiation ceremony called Amrit Sanchar, where individuals commit to the Khalsa way of life. This Amrit is a mixture of water and sugar, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening for the initiated.
