Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning
Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) is a type of food poisoning caused by consuming shellfish contaminated with toxins produced by certain algae, particularly Pseudonitzschia. These toxins, known as domoic acid, can accumulate in the tissues of shellfish, such as clams, mussels, and oysters, posing a risk to humans who eat them.
Symptoms of ASP can include confusion, memory loss, and gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases, it can lead to neurological damage or even death. Monitoring and regulation of shellfish harvesting areas are essential to prevent ASP outbreaks and protect public health.
