Aldolase
Aldolase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the metabolism of carbohydrates. It catalyzes the reversible reaction that converts fructose-1,6-bisphosphate into two three-carbon molecules: glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. This reaction is a key step in the glycolysis pathway, which is essential for energy production in cells.
There are three main types of aldolase: aldolase A, found in muscle and brain tissues; aldolase B, primarily in the liver; and aldolase C, located in the brain. Each type has specific functions and is important for maintaining proper metabolic processes in different tissues.
