Alcohol Metabolism
Alcohol metabolism is the process by which the body breaks down and eliminates alcohol, primarily through the liver. When a person consumes alcohol, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the liver, where enzymes, particularly alcohol dehydrogenase, convert it into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound.
Acetaldehyde is then further metabolized into acetic acid by another enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase. This acetic acid is eventually converted into carbon dioxide and water, which the body can easily eliminate. The rate of alcohol metabolism can vary based on factors such as genetics, age, and overall health.
