Ainu Mythology
Ainu mythology is the traditional belief system of the Ainu people, an indigenous group from northern Japan, particularly Hokkaido. It features a rich tapestry of gods, spirits, and mythical creatures, often referred to as kamuy. These deities are believed to inhabit natural elements like mountains, rivers, and animals, reflecting the Ainu's deep connection to nature.
Central to Ainu mythology is the concept of rituals and ceremonies that honor these spirits, ensuring harmony between humans and the natural world. The Iomante, or bear ceremony, is one of the most significant rituals, where a bear is honored as a divine being before its sacrifice, symbolizing respect for life and the cycle of nature.
