Afro-Shirazi Party
The Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) was a political party in Tanzania that played a significant role in the country's independence movement. Founded in 1957, it aimed to represent the interests of the Shirazi people and other African communities on the Zanzibar archipelago. The party sought to address social and economic inequalities and promote African nationalism.
In 1964, the ASP led a revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the establishment of a republic. Following the revolution, the party became the dominant political force in Zanzibar and later merged with the Tanganyika African National Union to form the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania.
