Africanized honey bees
Africanized honey bees, often called "killer bees," are a hybrid of African honey bees and European honey bees. They were first introduced to Brazil in the 1950s and have since spread throughout the Americas. These bees are known for their aggressive behavior and tendency to swarm more frequently than their European counterparts.
Despite their reputation, Africanized honey bees play a crucial role in pollination and contribute to biodiversity. They produce honey like other bee species, but their defensive nature can pose risks to humans and animals if their nests are disturbed. Understanding their behavior is essential for safe coexistence.
