Afonso V
Afonso V, also known as Afonso the African, was the King of Portugal from 1438 to 1481. He became king at a young age after the death of his father, King John I. Afonso V is known for his military campaigns in North Africa, particularly against the Moorish states, which aimed to expand Portuguese territory and influence.
During his reign, Afonso V also focused on strengthening Portugal's maritime power. He supported exploration along the West African coast, which laid the groundwork for future expeditions. His efforts contributed to the Age of Discovery, a period marked by significant exploration and expansion for Portugal.
