Acanthamoeba keratitis
Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare but serious eye infection caused by the Acanthamoeba parasite. This infection primarily affects the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, and is often associated with contact lens wear, especially when proper hygiene is not followed. Symptoms may include redness, pain, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.
If left untreated, Acanthamoeba keratitis can lead to severe complications, including vision loss. Diagnosis typically involves eye examinations and laboratory tests to identify the presence of the parasite. Treatment usually includes antimicrobial eye drops and, in severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.
