ADAMTS13
ADAMTS13 is a protein that plays a crucial role in blood clotting. It is responsible for breaking down a large protein called von Willebrand factor, which helps platelets stick together to form clots. When ADAMTS13 is deficient or dysfunctional, it can lead to excessive clotting in small blood vessels, a condition known as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).
TTP can cause serious health issues, including organ damage and low platelet counts. Monitoring ADAMTS13 levels and activity is important for diagnosing and managing TTP. Treatments often involve plasma exchange or medications to restore normal function of this essential protein.
