2016 Turkish coup attempt
On July 15, 2016, a faction within the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The coup involved soldiers blocking roads, taking control of key locations in Istanbul and Ankara, and declaring martial law. The government quickly mobilized loyal forces and called on citizens to resist the coup.
The attempt ultimately failed, leading to widespread arrests and a crackdown on perceived dissent. The Turkish government accused the Gülen movement, led by Fethullah Gülen, of orchestrating the coup, resulting in significant political and social repercussions in Turkey.
