2014 Thai coup
In May 2014, the military in Thailand staged a coup d'état, seizing control of the government. This action followed months of political unrest and protests against the ruling Pheu Thai Party, which was led by Yingluck Shinawatra. The military justified the coup by claiming it was necessary to restore order and stability in the country.
After the coup, the military established a junta called the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and imposed martial law. The junta suspended the constitution, banned political gatherings, and restricted media freedom. Elections were delayed, and the military maintained control until a new government was formed in 2019.
