Homonym: 八卦 (Gossip)
八卦 (Bāguà) refers to the eight trigrams used in Chinese philosophy and cosmology, originating from the ancient text 易经 (Yìjīng or I Ching). Each trigram consists of three lines, which can be either broken (representing yin) or unbroken (representing yang). The combinations of these lines symbolize various natural phenomena and concepts, such as heaven, earth, water, and fire.
In addition to its philosophical significance, 八卦 is also used in 风水 (Feng Shui) and 武术 (martial arts). In Feng Shui, the trigrams help determine the energy flow in a space, while in martial arts, they inform movement and strategy. The study of 八卦 encompasses both metaphysical and practical applications in Chinese culture.
