Ιοκάστη
Ιοκάστη, also known as Jocasta, is a character from Greek mythology. She is the mother and wife of Οιδίποδας (Oedipus), a tragic hero known for his complex fate. Ιοκάστη was originally the queen of Θήβα (Thebes) and played a significant role in the story of Oedipus, which is famously depicted in Σοφοκλής's play "Oedipus Rex."
In the myth, Ιοκάστη unknowingly marries her son, Oedipus, after he solves the riddle of the Σφίγγα (Sphinx) and becomes king. When the truth of their relationship is revealed, Ιοκάστη is overwhelmed by despair and takes her own life. Her story highlights themes of fate, identity, and the tragic consequences of ignorance.
