Clement V was a pope who served from 1305 to 1314. Born Bertrand de Got in France, he was elected pope while in the city of Viterbo, Italy. His papacy is notable for moving the papal residence to Avignon, which began a period known as the Avignon Papacy.
During his time as pope, Clement V faced significant challenges, including political conflicts and the fallout from the Knights Templar trials. He struggled to maintain the authority of the papacy while navigating the complex relationships between the French crown and other European powers.
