The western gorilla is one of two species of gorillas, scientifically known as Gorilla gorilla. They are primarily found in the forests of central and western Africa. These gorillas are characterized by their robust bodies, broad chests, and long arms. Adult males, known as silverbacks, can weigh up to 440 pounds and are distinguished by the silver hair on their backs. Western gorillas are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, and stems. They live in social groups led by a dominant male and are known for their intelligence and complex social structures. Unfortunately, they are classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.
