vertebrochondral ribs
Vertebrochondral ribs are a specific type of rib found in the human ribcage. They are also known as "false ribs" because they do not attach directly to the sternum (breastbone). Instead, these ribs connect to the cartilage of the ribs above them, which then connects to the sternum.
In total, there are five pairs of vertebrochondral ribs, numbered from the 8th to the 12th ribs. These ribs provide flexibility and protection to the thoracic cavity while allowing for the expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing.
