velvet worms
Velvet worms, also known as onychophorans, are soft-bodied, segmented creatures found in humid environments, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. They have a velvety texture due to their unique skin, which is covered in tiny, hair-like structures called setae. These fascinating animals can grow up to 15 centimeters long and are known for their distinct, worm-like appearance.
Velvet worms are carnivorous and use a specialized method to capture prey. They secrete a sticky slime from their mouth, which entangles insects and other small animals. Once the prey is immobilized, the velvet worm consumes it using its sharp jaws.
