Tuataras are unique reptiles native to New Zealand, often mistaken for lizards due to their similar appearance. However, they belong to a distinct order called Rhynchocephalia, which has existed for over 200 million years. Tuataras have a spiny crest along their backs and can live for more than 100 years, making them one of the longest-living reptiles.
These fascinating creatures are primarily nocturnal and have a special third eye on the top of their heads, which helps them detect light and movement. Tuataras mainly feed on insects and small animals, playing an important role in their ecosystem by helping to control pest populations.
