trigeminal nerve (CN V)
The trigeminal nerve (CN V) is the fifth cranial nerve and is primarily responsible for sensation in the face. It has three major branches: the ophthalmic nerve, the maxillary nerve, and the mandibular nerve. Each branch transmits sensory information from different areas of the face, including the forehead, cheeks, and jaw.
In addition to sensory functions, the mandibular nerve also controls some muscles involved in chewing. The trigeminal nerve plays a crucial role in facial sensation and motor functions, making it essential for everyday activities like eating and feeling touch or pain in the face.
