transverse processes
Transverse processes are bony projections located on either side of the vertebrae in the spine. They serve as attachment points for muscles and ligaments, helping to stabilize the spine and facilitate movement. Each vertebra has two transverse processes, one on the left and one on the right.
These structures are particularly prominent in the lumbar region of the spine, where they provide leverage for the muscles that support the back. In addition to their role in muscle attachment, transverse processes also help protect the spinal cord by providing a sturdy framework for the vertebral column, which is part of the skeletal system.
